Guided Tour
Annual Exhibition Academy of Fine Arts Vienna 2024 / Interviews with students transcripted into plays for the participants of the guided tour

Well, because it's a bit — we've often talked about rest spaces and the need to sleep, and sort of like, design or how do you put it, that work and non-work differ from each other somehow. And then I found it interesting that over the course of the processes and conversations, people said, no, resting isn't possible, but working is.We think of work still in terms of producing something, but we don't think about the time in which we gather strength. That got dropped at some point. And in order to enable work, you have to get your energy from somewhere. And so I thought it's good to have a place like this — especially in light of all the other things and these questions around the republic, where there's a lot of focus on activity. And then I thought, maybe it's good to simply have a place that isn't about activity or ideology or whatever.

Mm-hmm.

And then I thought again — sleep. Yes, like that. Exactly. And the large scale comes from those measurements we're always wrestling with. And that's how this large scale emerged, as opposed to the smaller ones. Yes, and as a community there should also be space here.

Exactly.

From off: Yes, it's very cozy.

Yes, it's very cozy.

And ******, would you say that in our republic there are clear roles and responsibilities, and if so, how did they get distributed?

How were they distributed? Yes, good question. Well, clear roles and responsibilities exist somehow, but also somehow not. I think — who or what does one work for, or do we work for? I think it still comes a little from that revolutionary or protest mindset that was there at the beginning, where you move toward something together as a unit. But that's not really possible in this class — or it's also not possible within the nature of studying, where everyone is finding their own paths.

And so — what was the question again?

Whether there are clear tasks in our republic and whether they're carried collectively or by individuals, and if so, how that division of roles came about.

Well, I do find it quite notable — what the men proposed as designs versus what the women proposed. I found that interesting in the distribution as well — for example, the food provision came from ****** and ******, the fabric. Like, somehow. Exactly, sorry, just a moment. And somehow this — though I'm looking at it a bit in binary terms now — this whole scaffolding versus everything else. But I did notice that the care work, or the tending to things — though it's also a bit awkward what I'm saying. No, that's not quite right.

So, did task positions —

No, I somehow don't know how to answer the question. Yeah. Where do we go from here?

****** interviews ******— first question. What are you doing right now?

I'm currently programming the lighting system in the studio.

Do you have an ideology?

Yes, I try to pass on my knowledge about light and video. It's quite hard for me, though, and I'm close to giving up. I actually find it easier to teach students than people who urgently need it in their professional lives.

Who's to blame?

People who have no curiosity, who don't want to learn, who think they already have a clue and know everything. I myself am still learning at 63 and constantly experimenting. What would your flag look like — completely in red, with a skull.

When is "earlier"?

Pardon? When is "earlier"? What does "earlier" mean?

The question here is: when is "earlier"?

Earlier.

Earlier.

Earlier.

Well, basically the time before my bad accident.

That is "earlier." And now is the present.

What do you think about overtime?

I have never worked overtime in my life — because I'm always working anyway.

Thank you for the conversation.

Hello ******, what are you doing right now?

I'm currently tinkering with a floating model.

What is a model?

A model is something large, made small.

And why is it floating?

It's floating because we lifted it onto a scaffold so you can look at it from above and walk underneath it.

Lovely. Would you describe yourself as a political person?

I would describe myself as a political person.

Why?

I'm very interested in political topics. I think it's very important to engage with political content. Yes, because otherwise — somehow doing something politically — because otherwise, I don't know, you usually have an opinion about it anyway and you just sort of go through the motions.

And who is to blame?

Who is to blame? That is an extremely difficult question that I genuinely can't answer in such a condensed way right now.

If you had a pill to make someone sleep for a really long time, who would it be? Really long. Like truly, truly long — Sleeping Beauty-style.

The problem is that the person would wake up eventually, and that just shifts the problem to later, doesn't it?

But who annoys you so much that you'd put them to sleep for a good long while?

I don't know if I want to answer that question. I find it really difficult.

Did a name immediately pop into your head?

Yeah.

Okay. Last question. What office do you hold in our class republic?

What office, you say? Which one? Oh.Oh, that's a very interesting question. What office do I hold in the — where?

You're allowed to be a megalomaniac.

Allowed to be a megalomaniac. Yeah. I don't know, maybe we have an office for — for help, where someone actually helps me for once. Like, how do you do this, or whatever. No. Ah yes — maybe the makeshift office. Maybe, maybe like a sort of makeshift makeshift-office. Yes, the person for all makeshift solutions. Not all of them…

————————————————————————————————————————————————

Okay, and I heard earlier that you set up some workstations that you're very proud of. Would you like to tell me why?

Because we did it together, the two of us.

And?

And because I think we did it quickly and nicely, together.

What do we need the workstations for, if it's actually open day right now?

Because we're always working.

Could you maybe tell me more about the work we're always doing?

Well, we'll be there — I can imagine I'll be sewing, possibly, if I get around to it. And it might be that David and I need to meet with a director there, maybe.

With whom?

Or no? No, we actually wanted to build a model. We wanted to build a model. Yes, for our semester project. Because our finals aren't until next week. And that's why we always have to keep working during open day.

And what is that? Can you describe the secret topic without giving away what it actually is?

Hmm. Wow. Okay, so for us, concretely for our group, it's about — in a different room than this one, in a different building that's actually used for something else than what we're supposed to fit it out for. So we're supposed to build or design office spaces in there, I'd say. And we're trying to do it as cleverly as possible. What would you say, David?

****** is asleep.

Okay, and in this context it would naturally be interesting — what does "the public" mean to you?

The public, for me, is that bench we have there — that incredibly ugly bench, in my opinion. Many people love it, but when I sit on it, I immediately feel like I'm in public space. And "public" basically also means public space.

Since the open day is also taking place under the theme of "Republic" — where do you find the public here, or is this a public space?

I don't know, I think "public" is actually the wrong word for it — it's really about community, isn't it? Or?

Can a community not be public?

Open, yes, open.

Okay, then just a very quick recap. It's Wednesday. What have you done from Monday until today?

Oh, great question. I helped build this bed.

I built a rolling cart for our stove, which turned out kind of badly, I know. Then I almost finished building a table for the small kitchen. Then I tidied up a lot. I cooked a lot. Yesterday I joined the graduation dinner. Then I helped set up the Holesome Factory across the way with ******.
